One more thing - I've tried to include images with this post, but I'm not sure if it's worked or not - let me know if they're showing up.

HEARTS OF IRON IV FORUM UPDATE

I'll give folks some time to respond with suggestions for a nation to play and then post an update setting out the lay of the land. I'm happy to entertain suggestions for any nation, but probably won't pick one that's too small to get anything done. I've not even mentioned all the big players (such as Austria or the French Republic), but didn't want to make this post even longer than it already is. In keeping with standard HoI, any nation is playable, even if only technically (Luxemburg can't really achieve much). Most of them won't come into conflict with the major powers until fairly late in the day, when it's too late to make much of a difference to the wider war.

The common thread with the rest of the world is that their conflicts are more or less self-contained. India is a straight fight between the Dominion of India (the remnants of British India), the Princely Federation and the Bharatiya Commune.Įast Asia is a complete mess, with innumerable Chinese factions, Russian breakaway Transamur and various other Japanese puppets. Egypt has the potential to become a regional power, as does Persia. The Ottomans and their neighbours are one big mess - the Ottomans often find themselves beset on all sides, and always face at least one existential challenge in the course of the game. Of these, Argentina and Chile are the bigger countries, although Patagonia can replace Argentina if it can defeat it on the battlefield. South America is a confused scrum, with Argentina on one side and Chile, Patagonia and Paraguay on the other. Of course, that seems to be an overall tendency, not a set-in-stone group of rules - but you can still notice that pattern on other franchises and other types of media as well.Aside from the countries listed above, there are a number of more regional conflicts that look fun. Repare how the "goofy" skull cursor and the bright red letters got replaced with a minimal interface in Doom 3. Here's an example of typographic styles from the 90's (Sonic CD) and from the 00's (Sonic Adventure 2):Īnd here's a comparison between Ultimate Doom and Doom 3: However, these numbers kept their popularity on more historical or fantasy oriented games like RPGs or other media that represents an old time period. In many cases, roman numbers was perceived as non-futuristic, too random or simply inadequated. The 00's however was marked by a futuristic, sober and clean design - with plain or curvy aesthetics. On the late 90's, the dark\gritty took it's place in terms of visuals (Quake or Duke instead of Wolf 3D), but the craziness somewhat survived in one way or another. Not only that, but also embraced the kitsch and the silly as part of their identity. The early 90's for example was very focused on vibrant and strong colours - probably reminiscent of the new wave\memphis-style that started on the 80's. Take it with a grain of salt, but here's my impression on it:Įach decade have a somewhat cultural zeitgeist, which includes a different approuch on art, aesthetics and narrative. THE KING OF FIGHTERS XIV STEAM EDITION (2017) METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN (2015) Sword of the Stars II: Enhanced Edition (2012)ĭARK SOULS II: Scholar of the First Sin (2015) Galactic Civilizations II: Ultimate Edition (2008) Total War: MEDIEVAL II – Definitive Edition (2006) Galactic Civilizations I: Ultimate Edition (2003) In Countries with former roman Population, as in Spain for Example, you can see Roman Numbers used for Years on Magazines and Newspapers.īut seing newer images, they gave it up counting haha It is not true, but that word sprayed among the Marketing People and now we rarely have Numbers, much worse, they Name the Games or Movies the same as the Original, such as Doom 2016 (and ID dislikes that it is called so by everyone haha). The Beta Logo for Doom 3 was actually with roman ones:Īs current Examples, Final Fantasy and Civilization still use them, because it fits the Style of the Games.īut they gave up using Numbers at all, because some stupid Marketing Fuzzi thought that Numbers are scaring Customers that they missed out something. Well, it really depends on the Game, as they ever used it stylewise. so why did people abandon it? it was so good and stylish because roman numerals look cool. This question keeps coming up in my mind, back then people had games like Doom, Heretic and other games, but really people shifted away from this and did games like Half -Life 2, Doom 3, and for the nintendo bois Mega Man 7, i searched around the internet and saw nothing, i just saw people talking about it the way around (why do people use roman numerals instead of arabic ones in games).
